François Bayrou is facing strong criticism for his delayed and perceived lack of interest in the aftermath of Cyclone Chido's devastating impact on Mayotte. To salvage his reputation and regain the trust of the Mahorais people, he is visiting the island with five ministers to demonstrate his commitment to the reconstruction effort. The visit comes after Bayrou was heavily criticized for attending a local government meeting in Pau instead of being present in Mayotte during the immediate aftermath of the cyclone. His decision to announce his government lineup on the day of the national mourning period further fuelled these criticisms.
